Atmospheric Science / CIRA Research Addition
Fort Collins, Colorado
$1,860,000 · 2002
Client: Colorado State University
The ATS/CIRA Research Center was a joint project for the Department of Atmospheric Science (ATS) and the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA) at the CSU's Foothills Campus. The 14,300 sq. ft. addition provides tape data storage, learning center/laboratory space, as well as clustered office groupings and conference rooms for research teams.
The three-story addition was sited adjacent to the main ATS facility and north of the CIRA building for close proximity to each, partially built into the natural terrain to align new programmed spaces of both ATS and CIRA with their respective floor levels.
An upper level interior catwalk, accented with floor-to-ceiling curtain-wall and exposed steel framing members, connects the new addition with the stairwell and elevator tower of the existing building. This high traffic circulation spine affords users with dramatic views overlooking the city of Fort Collins.
Professional services included programming and full architectural and engineering services.

James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital Argus/Tumor Research Center
Fort Collins, Colorado
$7,200,000 · 2001
Client: Colorado State University
The Argus/Tumor Research Center is a 35,200 sq. ft. addition to the Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital. The complex provides new MRI and Nuclear Medicine departments, state-of-the-art research laboratories, administrative offices, training/classrooms, and examination rooms with adjacent observation rooms for veterinary students.
The new addition was designed to wrap the south and west sides of the original 1978 facility, creating a new cutting edge architectural image for the Teaching Hospital. Brick and split-face concrete block were used to differentiate the addition from the "industrial" precast concrete of the original, articulated by horizontal bands and precast concrete sunscreens. A new entrance plaza provides an enhanced hospital entry, blending the two buildings together. Extensive natural daylighting was introduced throughout the new building.
Professional services included programming and full architectural, engineering and laboratory design services.
